Ported common.mustCall functions to assert module. This can be used for confirming promises are resolved at process exit.

Fix: #31392

Could I get some pointers on the documentation side of this, I'm not too sure about the YAML stuff in the markdown files. And I chose exit code 13 as I was unsure which one to choose from here

Good work on the PR but this approach is not ideal. I'm definitely thinking something closer to common.mustCall() is going to be better.

Can we not just add this to assert.rejects and such directly? You could duplicate common.mustCall into assert and use that inside the other functions.

I've long wondered if something like common.mustCall() should be added to the public assert API. The one thing I've been concerned about is the "if you use it in a process exit handler, it won't work" gotcha, but now we have code that causes it to throw when it's used that way, so maybe it's time?

@Trott seems fine to me to expose it, I just also want the promise functions to use it by default.

Apart from the issues already pointed out, I don't think "exit with a non-zero status code when an unresolved promise exists" is a useful API. It doesn't tell you what promise or where it came from.

Users are going to ask for something better but tracking that information introduces the memory consumption problems I mention in #31392 (comment). It's just not a good approach, IMO.

Two things: I'd avoid mustCallAtLeast() initially. Just do mustCall(). We can add mustCallAtLeast() later if it's needed. By not adding it not, we have options to not add it if it's not needed, add it as an option to mustCall() rather than a separate function, and so on. Doing it incrementally increases the chances that we'll get it right.

Second, mustCall() should probably be calls() or something like that to align it with throws() and rejects().
