At head, I ran mvn dependency:tree and it failed like so. I'm not sure whether this matters or not, but I thought I'd log it in case it does.

This is a problem with mvn dependency:tree, which doesn't compile module dependencies for you. Please run mvn install -DskipTests in the root directory first.
