fix coverage report

There is a lot of code that is not covered by tests. lcov does not find the code.

With PR #9 we are able to use a newer gcc to compile the code. Unfortunately PR #11 shows that there is still a problem when we try to gcc-8. Wrong lines are hit! For example comments are executed.
