Data Processing in Metview

CDO offers a rich set of analysis and manipulation tools all built into a command line tool. Making them available to all Metview users sounds like a good idea

Plan

The exiting python-bindings of CDO (https://github.com/Try2Code/cdo-bindings) might be used together with the python interface for Metview to make CDO callable from the GUI.
Alternatively a new interface could be developed.

first target is to verify some results from the paper https://www.mpg.de/10579957/W004_Environment_climate_062-069.pdf, page 7.

This is the correlation between CO2 emissions and northern hemisphere sea ice extend minimum in September (1984-2014). Data sources are

• ERA interim for sea ice cover
• CAMS for co2

CDO is used to compute the sea ice extend and time series output. Plotting is currently done with matplotlib directly.

With the Metview-Python interface only being pushed on GitHub on Friday before the hackathon, it was no surprised that we encounter some challenges. Working on the example above we see that much can be offered to improve the usability aspects of processing CDS data.

• We identified some ares where we can make improvements
• Current exchange Metview & CDO is file based, but an xarray based should be possible very soon
  -- Allow user not to worry about data formats

The target is to demonstrate a script by the October Python workshop to:

• Access data from CDS/MARS
• Process retrieved data with CDO's extensive functionality of its operators
• Visualise the result through Metview's powerful visualisation capabilities
  --> Demonstrate CDO & Metview as good tools for the CDS toolbox
