Prioritize “Getting Started” and hide empty “For You”

Background

Nearly everyone who completes onboarding interacts with the time-sensitive task of validating their account, which occupies the top-left position on Home. Once the account is validated, the Time Sensitive slot disappears, and the For You slot is promoted to the first position.

During onboarding, the For You slot is empty and provides no actionable content. Despite this, it continues to occupy one of the most prominent positions on the Home page.

Proposal

• Hide the “For You” slot until there is actionable content to display.

  • For any new customer that onboards, this slot will be automatically hidden until there is a to-do there (report to submit, approve, export, or pay)
  • For any recently onboarded customer (onboarded within the last 60 days), we hide this slot if a report has never been created, approved, or paid (meaning that nothing ever populated in the For you slot), else we keep it as is, even if it is currently empty.

• Move “Getting Started” to the left column above “For You” on the web, matching the placement already used on mobile. This will place “Getting Started” in the most prominent position on Home once account validation is complete, making it easier for users to discover and complete the next steps in their onboarding journey.

These changes should help users progress through onboarding and complete key setup actions that can accelerate conversion.

Okay so here is our starting point, what exists today:

If we simply do the swap you are requesting using today's UI, we get this:

We could take that a step further and make a more engaging "Getting started" section that uses a more similar UI pattern as other cards. Here I'm also injecting some color into the other cards and using the new Announcements style we explored:

Other idea: do we call out the account manager in any capacity in this card?

We also explored a variety of other treatments, but I think something like the above makes the most sense for now as it's consistent with today's UI without redoing all of the cards.

I dig this to make Getting started look more like a star of the show rather than a little checkbox list. If we're trying to make it more front and center, I like the idea of also trying to make it a bit more engaging looking/feeling.

Would also be interested to see the icon get dimmed for completed tasks!

Nice mockups! I love that you kept the subtext from our earlier explorations today. I’m a big fan of including a high-level explanation for each feature, as it provides helpful context and makes the options feel more approachable. I particularly like the copy you added for Rules and Connect to QuickBooks. I do have a few suggestions for Link company cards and Create a workspace, but overall I think this is heading in a great direction.

I’d probably make the Begin button green for consistency, since primary actions are often styled that way. The badge and icon could then be slightly dimmed to keep the focus on the CTA. Also, it might be worth mocking up how it would look with the For you slot populating beneath "Getting started" to check if we might not end up with too many buttons at once.

I also like the idea of highlighting guided support. In this case, I assume we’d be directing users to their guide (Account Executive), if they have one, or to Concierge otherwise. Either way, I imagine we’d route them to the #admins room. My only concern is that it would take users completely out of the Home page and into the Inbox, which could feel a bit disruptive. If we could have #admins open on the RHP as we do with Concierge everywhere, then that would be ideal, but that would be a much bigger change to make.

I'm definitely not against it, but I'm also not fully sure it's worth it either. I feel a bit 50/50. As we're currently underway of doing the workshops with defining the style I wonder if this could go against that. Especially the use of color.

I do like the extra text next to each task, but I do also like the simplicity the UI has today where it's very clear from a quick scan what these are, namely tasks. And the cognetive load without an icon, just a simple check, feels very lightweight and separates them a bit from the other cards.

Definitely not feeling like this is bad or anything, but also not overly on the side that this feels like a no-brainer upgrade. So I end sitting a bit ambivalent in the middle even though it looks nice.

I also think the changes to announcements make them more important than they are. Mentioned this somewhere else, but I've not seen any signals that users care about it. I believe our data suggests they have minimal engagement which can be a sign of that.
