Expenses that are not yet reported should display an "Unreported" status badge in the Status column. The Status column should always be visible, and no row should appear with an empty status cell.

Updated 2026-04-23: Revised based on feedback from shawnborton (reference). The expected behavior has changed: instead of hiding the Status column when no expenses have a status, we should show an "Unreported" status badge for expenses that aren't yet reported.

What is the root cause of that problem?

The StatusCell component returns null when getReportStatusTranslation returns an empty string or getReportStatusColorStyle returns undefined. For personal chat expenses (tracked expenses not on an expense report), stateNum/statusNum are either undefined or don't match any mapped status combination, so both functions fall through to their empty/undefined return — leaving every Status cell blank.

The relevant fallthrough paths:

• getReportStatusTranslation returns '' when stateNum/statusNum are undefined or unrecognized
• getReportStatusColorStyle returns undefined in the same cases

What changes do you think we should make in order to solve the problem?

Add an "Unreported" status as the default fallback in both status helper functions, so expenses that haven't been submitted to a report display a meaningful status badge.

1. In getReportStatusTranslation (ReportUtils.ts:13178): Change the final return ''; fallback to return translate('common.unreported'); — the unreported translation key already exists in all supported languages.

2. In getReportStatusColorStyle (ReportUtils.ts:13209): Change the final return undefined; fallback to return a new unreported badge style from the theme (e.g., return theme.reportStatusBadge.unreported;).

3. Add unreported to reportStatusBadge in the theme definitions — add the badge color/text color styling (matching the design shown in shawnborton's comment).

4. Keep the Status column default as true — no changes needed to getColumnsToShow() in SearchUIUtils.ts, since the column should always be visible now that every expense will have a displayable status.

This is a minimal change: the two fallback lines in ReportUtils plus a theme entry. StatusCell needs no modification since it already renders a badge whenever both a non-empty translation and a color style are returned.

What alternative solutions did you explore?

The original proposal (hiding the Status column when no data is present) is no longer the desired behavior per shawnborton's feedback. The alternative of adding a separate isUnreported check in StatusCell was considered but rejected — putting the fallback in the shared status helpers keeps the logic centralized and ensures any other consumer of these functions also benefits from the "Unreported" status.

What is the root cause of that problem?

Both getReportStatusTranslation and getReportStatusColorStyle bail out early when stateNum or statusNum is undefined -- the translation function returns '' and the color function returns undefined. This causes StatusCell to render nothing (line 31: if (!statusText || !reportStatusColorStyle) return null), leaving a blank cell in the status column for any unreported expense.

Instead of returning empty values when stateNum/statusNum are undefined, we should fall back to "Unreported" as the default status. This requires three small changes: (1) add 'unreported' to the reportStatusBadge type and define its colors in both theme files, (2) change getReportStatusTranslation to return translate('common.unreported') instead of '', and (3) change getReportStatusColorStyle to return theme.reportStatusBadge.unreported instead of undefined. The common.unreported translation key already exists in all language files, so no translation work is needed.

What is the root cause of that problem?

The expense list uses getColumnsToShow to decide which table columns exist. For the default expense search layout, Status was always turned on in the column map, and in the custom-column path Status was grouped with columns that are kept even when every cell is empty. Nothing in that flow turned Status on only when at least one row would actually show a badge. The cell itself renders nothing when the report has no usable stateNum/statusNum (or nothing that maps to a badge), so the header stayed while every cell under it was blank.
